Using Chroma AI on Edge, Brave, Opera and Other Chromium Browsers

Chroma AI is distributed through the Chrome Web Store, which leads a lot of people to assume it's Chrome-only. It isn't. Every Chromium-based browser can install and run it — Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Arc and others — because they all share the same extension platform. The only difference is how each one lets you install from the Chrome Web Store.

Why one extension works across so many browsers

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Arc are all built on Chromium, the open-source project behind Chrome. They share the rendering engine and — importantly here — the same extension APIs and packaging format. An extension written for Chrome is, technically, an extension written for all of them.

What differs is distribution. Each browser vendor decides which extension stores to trust by default, and some are more cautious about pulling from a competitor's store. That's a policy choice, not a technical limit, and every one of them provides a way to opt in.

Microsoft Edge

Edge maintains its own add-ons store and doesn't accept Chrome Web Store installs until you allow it. One switch, once:

1. Click the ⋯ menu (top right) → Extensions.
2. Open Manage extensions.
3. In the lower left, turn on Allow extensions from other stores, then confirm with Allow.
4. Visit the Chroma AI listing and click Add to Chrome — Edge installs it normally.

After installing, pin it: open the extensions menu in the toolbar and click the pin icon next to Chroma AI so it's one click away.

Brave

The simplest case. Brave accepts Chrome Web Store extensions directly — open the listing and the button reads Add to Brave. Nothing to enable first.

One Brave-specific note: Brave's Shields block scripts on some sites by default. Chroma AI only styles ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and Shields don't interfere with extension content scripts, so themes apply normally.

Opera

Opera has its own add-ons catalogue and doesn't install from the Chrome Web Store out of the box. The standard route:

1. Install the Install Chrome Extensions add-on from Opera's own add-ons site.
2. Visit the Chroma AI listing on the Chrome Web Store.
3. Click the Add to Opera button that the helper adds to the page.

It's an extra step, but a one-time one — after that, installed extensions update and behave as they do elsewhere.

Vivaldi, Arc and other Chromium browsers

Vivaldi and Arc both install Chrome Web Store extensions directly, with no setting to change — open the listing and add it. The same holds for most smaller Chromium-based browsers; if the store page shows an "Add to…" button naming your browser, you're set.

What differs once it's installed

The core experience — backgrounds, presets, glass effects, the Theme Gallery — is identical everywhere, because it's the same code doing the same thing to the same web pages. A few small things vary by browser:

• Where the icon lives. Each browser handles pinning slightly differently. Look for the puzzle-piece or extensions button in the toolbar and pin Chroma AI from there.
• The keyboard shortcut. Ctrl + Shift + E opens the sidebar. If your browser already uses that combination for something else, its own extension-shortcut settings let you change it.
• Updates. Extensions installed from the Chrome Web Store update through it, regardless of which Chromium browser you're using.
• Sign-in. Account features work the same way; you sign in inside the extension rather than through the browser.

What isn't supported

• Firefox — uses a different extension platform. A Firefox build is possible but would be a separate package, not the same install.
• Safari — requires extensions to ship inside a signed macOS app, a different distribution path entirely.
• Mobile browsers — Chrome on Android and iOS don't support desktop-style extensions.
• Official desktop apps — no browser extension can reach those. We wrote about why, and what to do instead.
