How to Customize Claude AI — Background, Colors & Theme

Claude's interface is deliberately minimal, and the only appearance option is light or dark. If you write or research in Claude for hours, a custom background and color theme make a real difference. Here's how to customize Claude.ai in about two minutes.
Step 1 — Install the extension
Add Chroma AI from the Chrome Web Store and pin it using the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar.
Step 2 — Open Claude and launch the sidebar
Go to claude.ai and click the pinned Chroma AI icon. The editor slides in from the right with presets, background upload, glass controls and fonts.
Step 3 — Choose a theme or background
- Color presets — 12 free hand-tuned themes. Midnight gives Claude a deeper dark mode; Ocean and Forest keep things calm for long reading.
- Your own image or GIF — upload a photo, artwork or animated wallpaper as the Claude background.
- Community themes — apply a design from the Theme Gallery in one click.
Step 4 — Refine it for long sessions
Claude is a reading- and writing-heavy tool, so comfort matters more than flash:
- Glass blur & opacity — keep the message column crisp over any background.
- Color overlay — tint the interface to reduce contrast harshness at night.
- Fonts (Pro) — swap Claude's default typeface for something easier on your eyes.
- Saved presets (Pro) — keep a bright "daytime" look and a dark "late-night" look, and switch in one click.
Setting up Claude for long writing sessions
Claude tends to attract long-form work — drafting, editing, reasoning through a problem across many messages. That changes what a good theme looks like. For a tool you dip into for a minute, visual punch is fine. For something you sit inside for three hours, comfort wins every time.
- Lower the contrast slightly. Maximum-contrast text is the first thing that tires eyes over long stretches. Softening white toward off-white, or black toward a deep grey, is barely noticeable at a glance and noticeably kinder after an hour.
- Choose a background you can ignore. This sounds like faint praise, but it's the real test: a great workspace wallpaper is one you stop consciously seeing. Gradients, mist, distant landscapes and soft abstract textures all pass. Anything with faces, text or sharp repeating patterns keeps grabbing you.
- Give long text room to breathe. Claude's responses can run long. A heavier glass layer behind the conversation area makes paragraphs easier to track than a barely-there one, even if the lighter setting looks prettier in a screenshot.
- Think about your reading time of day. If most of your Claude time is late at night, build for that: darker background, warmer accent, gentler contrast. A palette optimized for daylight will feel glaring at 1 a.m.
- Save it once you like it. With Pro you can store the combination as a preset, which matters more here than anywhere else — the setup you tuned for deep work is worth being able to return to in one click.
Working with artifacts and code
A lot of Claude use involves generated documents and code blocks, and those have their own visual needs:
- Check a code block before committing to a palette. Syntax highlighting is designed against a certain background brightness. Extremely dark or extremely light custom backgrounds can flatten the color differences that make code scannable.
- Keep the reading column calm. Whatever your wallpaper does at the edges of the screen, the area behind long text and code should stay quiet. Raising blur and opacity affects the glass layer, which is exactly the region where readability matters.
- Use accent color as a wayfinder. If you keep several AI tools open, giving Claude a distinct accent makes it instantly identifiable when you're switching tabs quickly.
Chroma AI restyles the appearance only — it doesn't alter the content Claude produces, and copying text or code out works exactly as it normally would.
Troubleshooting
The theme didn't take effect.
Refresh claude.ai (Ctrl + R / ⌘ + R). Tabs opened before installing the extension need one reload.
Code blocks are hard to read with my background.
Increase opacity so the glass layer behind the code is more solid, and avoid backgrounds at the extreme ends of brightness. A mid-tone image keeps syntax colors distinct.
My settings from ChatGPT didn't carry over.
By design — each platform stores its own theme, so nothing bleeds between them. Open the sidebar on Claude to style it separately.
How do I remove the theme entirely?
Choose "Disable theme" in the sidebar. Claude returns to its default appearance right away, and nothing about your account or conversations is affected.

Claude ships light, dark, and match-system appearance options in its settings. If your goal is simply "stop the white glare at night," that setting is the whole answer, and it will keep working through every future interface change.
Why Claude is a harder theming target than most
Claude's interface leans heavily on a small number of surface colours and generous whitespace, which means changes that look harmless in a screenshot — a saturated background, a tighter line height — do more damage to readability here than they would on a denser interface. Long-form responses are the main content, so anything that reduces text contrast or shortens line spacing is felt immediately.
If you customise Claude, change the background and leave the text layer alone. That single rule prevents most of the results people end up reverting.
Doing it yourself
A user stylesheet manager such as Stylus can apply your own CSS to claude.ai. Expect the same maintenance burden described elsewhere in these guides: generated class names, no stability guarantee, and silent breakage after a deploy. It is a reasonable choice if you enjoy maintaining it, and a poor one if you want something that simply keeps working.
